Sultanbawa Award
Recognising the best research paper presented at the Annual Sessions and celebrating the distinguished legacy of Vidya Jyothi Professor Mohamed Uvais Siddeek Sultanbawa.
Honouring a Distinguished Legacy
The award is made from the Professor M. U. S. Sultanbawa Felicitation Fund, established on the occasion of his 75th birthday to recognise his unique, distinguished and significant contribution to Science, Chemistry, Education and Research in Sri Lanka.
Professor Mohamed Uvais Siddeek Sultanbawa
Vidya Jyothi Professor Mohamed Uvais Siddeek Sultanbawa made a distinguished contribution to the cause of Science, Chemistry, Education and Research in Sri Lanka. The award established in his honour continues to recognise excellence in research presented at the Institute's Annual Sessions.
Excellence in Research
The award is presented annually for the best research paper presented at the Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
30% Desk Evaluation · 70% Presentation
The selection process combines assessment of the submitted extended abstract with the research presentation and subsequent discussion at the Annual Sessions.
Desk Evaluation
The extended abstract submitted for consideration is evaluated as part of the initial assessment.
Presentation
The research presentation at the Annual Sessions, together with the discussion following the presentation, forms the major part of the evaluation.
Minimum Requirement for Presentation
Only applicants obtaining a minimum of 50% on the desk evaluation will be invited to make a presentation for consideration for the award.
Who Can Apply?
The award is intended for researchers presenting eligible research at the IChemC Annual Sessions.
Sri Lankan Citizens
The award is open to citizens of Sri Lanka.
Annual Sessions
Applicants must present a research paper at the Annual Sessions.
Work in Sri Lanka
The work must have been principally carried out and completed in Sri Lanka.
Action Research
The paper must be based on action research and not a literature review, including a systematic review.
Important Conditions
Formal Application
Applicants must submit the prescribed Form D together with the abstract and extended abstract to the Honorary Secretary of the Institute.
Multiple Authors
When more than one author presents the paper, the prescribed form should be submitted by an author who is a Corporate Member of the Institute.
Presentation
The formal presentation can be made by any author who is a Corporate or Graduate Member of the Institute. All authors may participate in the subsequent discussion.
Original Work
Work previously presented and recognised for any award in Sri Lanka or abroad is not eligible for consideration.
Awards Committee
Applications from a member or close relative of a member of the Awards Committee will not be considered.
Language
The medium of communication for the award process shall be English.

Recipients of the Professor M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry listed from the latest available year.
Presented at the Annual Sessions
The award is presented at the Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. The selection is based on the extended abstract, the research presentation and the discussion following the presentation.
2026 Award Cycle
Under the revised 2026 criteria, applicants were required to submit Form D together with the abstract and extended abstract by 31 March 2026. The award is intended for the best eligible research paper presented at the 55th Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
