Who We Are

Institute of Chemistry Ceylon

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon is one of the oldest scientific bodies in Sri Lanka, with a long-standing commitment to the advancement and professional development of Chemistry and the Chemical Sciences.

The Institute was incorporated by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972 and is the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon, which was founded in 1941.

The Institute has played a significant role in promoting chemical education, research, professional standards and the application of Chemical Sciences for national development.

Legal Status

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon was incorporated by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972.

The Institute was approved as a charity by the Government of Sri Lanka through Gazette Notification No. 121 of 1980.

Degree Awarding Status

The Institute is recognized as a Degree Awarding Institute under Section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978.

Through its educational activities, the Institute contributes to the development of professionally qualified graduates in the Chemical Sciences.

A Legacy in Chemical Sciences

As the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon, established in 1941, the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon has continued a proud tradition of advancing Chemistry and serving the scientific and professional community of Sri Lanka.

Our Purpose

Aims & Objectives

The Institute works to promote Chemistry and its applications while supporting education, research, professional standards and national development.

To promote the study and practice of Chemistry and its applications.

To advise the Government and public bodies on matters relating to Chemistry and Chemical Sciences.

To disseminate knowledge of Chemistry through publications, meetings, lectures, conferences and other appropriate activities.

To promote and support education and research in Chemistry and related disciplines.

To provide opportunities for persons eligible for membership to obtain professional qualifications in Chemistry.

To conduct qualifying examinations and offer diplomas, certificates and other qualifications in the Chemical Sciences.

To promote and maintain high professional standards among those engaged in Chemistry and related fields.

To establish and maintain links with scientific, professional and educational organizations locally and internationally.

To raise the status and recognition of the Chemistry profession and those working in Chemical Sciences.

To encourage cooperation and collaboration among chemists, scientists, educators, researchers and industry.

To support activities that contribute to the advancement and popularization of Chemical Sciences in Sri Lanka.

To undertake any other measures considered necessary for achieving the objectives of the Institute.

Governance & Administration

The Institute is governed by a Council which is elected annually in accordance with the provisions governing the Institute.

The Council provides overall direction and leadership to the Institute and is supported by statutory committees and subcommittees appointed to undertake specific areas of activity.

This structure enables the Institute to maintain professional standards while ensuring that its educational, research, scientific and administrative activities are effectively coordinated.

& Professional Development

Education in Chemical Sciences

Education is one of the principal areas through which the Institute fulfils its mission. The Institute provides opportunities for students and professionals to develop knowledge, practical competence and professional skills in the Chemical Sciences.

Through the College of Chemical Sciences and its educational programmes, the Institute contributes to the development of graduates and professionally qualified personnel for industry, academia, research institutions and other sectors.

The Institute also supports continuing professional development through scientific meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, training programmes and other educational activities.

Contribution to the Advancement of Chemistry

The Institute operates for the advancement and popularization of Chemistry and the Chemical Sciences. Any monetary gains generated through its activities are invested in the development and promotion of Chemistry rather than being distributed as dividends.

This principle allows the Institute to continue investing in education, professional development, scientific activities, research and other initiatives that support the Chemical Sciences community.
