The Devanathan Memorial Award is presented annually to commemorate the commendable contributions and devoted services of Dr. M. A. V. Devanathan to the international community, the nation and the professional body of chemists in Sri Lanka.
A Legacy in Physical Chemistry
Dr. M. A. V. Devanathan, the doyen of Physical Chemistry in Sri Lanka, was one of the country's greatest and internationally renowned chemists.
Devanathan's Triple Layer Theory
His name is associated with the Triple Layer Theory in Electrochemistry, widely known as Devanathan's Triple Layer Theory.
A Memorial to Scientific Excellence
A continuing recognition of original research in Physical Chemistry and closely related fields.

The award is intended for an exceptional research contribution of an original nature in the field of Physical Chemistry and related areas.
Contributions are assessed over the last ten years, with consideration given to research publications, patents, H-index and journal impact factor.

Only research contributions within the specified Physical Chemistry fields are considered for the award.
Physical Chemistry
Original research in the broad field of Physical Chemistry.
Physical-Analytical
Research combining principles of Physical and Analytical Chemistry.
Physical-Inorganic
Research at the interface of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry.
Physical-Organic
Research combining Physical and Organic Chemistry.
Biophysical Chemistry
Research applying Physical Chemistry principles to biological systems.
Medal, monetary award & lecture
The award combines formal recognition with an opportunity for the recipient to share their research with the chemistry community.
Silver Medal
The recipient receives a Silver Medal in recognition of an exceptional original research contribution in the relevant fields.
Monetary Award
The award includes a monetary prize of Rs. 25,000/- together with the Silver Medal.
Marking Scheme
Contributions made during the last ten years are considered when assessing candidates for the award.
Research Publications
- Research publications in SCI/SCIE journals and Scopus-indexed journals: up to 3 points per publication.
- Additional 2 points for indexing in the specified indices.
- No maximum limit for qualifying publications.
- Research publications in other peer-reviewed journals: up to 2 marks per publication.
- No maximum limit for other qualifying peer-reviewed publications.
Patents
- International patents: up to 10 points per patent.
- Maximum 30 points for international patents.
- Local patents: up to 5 points per patent.
- Maximum 20 points for local patents.
H-Index
The H-index of the applicant is considered in the assessment.

Minimum Eligibility Requirement
The minimum requirement for eligibility for the award is 50 marks.
Important Assessment Notes
- For publications and patents involving multiple authors, marks will be allocated based on the applicant's contribution stated in the application.
- Only publications, patents and research contributions in Physical Chemistry, Physical-Analytical Chemistry, Physical-Inorganic Chemistry, Physical-Organic Chemistry and Biophysical Chemistry shall be considered.
- Research publications in SCI/SCIE and other peer-reviewed journals should be categorised accordingly.
- Contributions considered for the award are assessed over the last ten years.

An opportunity for the award recipient to present their recognised research at the Institute's Annual Sessions.
Sharing Research Excellence
The recipient of the Devanathan Memorial Award is invited to deliver the “Devanathan Memorial Award Lecture” at the Institute's Annual Sessions.
The lecture provides a platform for the recipient to share their research contribution with members of the Institute and the wider scientific community.

The Devanathan Memorial Award celebrates original research in Physical Chemistry and related fields, while honouring the enduring scientific legacy of Dr. M. A. V. Devanathan.
