The Women Chemists Committee (WCC) of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon provides a dedicated platform for women chemists and the wider scientific community to connect, exchange experiences and contribute to the advancement of chemistry in Sri Lanka.

Through scientific events, professional discussions, competitions, networking opportunities and initiatives that highlight the achievements of women in science, the WCC encourages greater participation and leadership in chemistry and STEM.

The Committee also provides opportunities for students, researchers and professionals to share ideas, develop their capabilities and engage with important issues affecting diversity and inclusion in science.

Sri Lankan Women Chemists’ Breakfast 2026

The Women Chemists Committee of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon successfully organized the Sri Lankan Women Chemists’ Breakfast on 10 February 2026 at the IChemC Malabe Campus, alongside the IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast.

The event supported the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and was conducted under the theme “Many Voices, One Science.”

Programme

The programme opened with remarks by Prof. Hema Pathirana, followed by an introduction by Prof. Suranga Wickramarachchi.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Anuruddhi Edirisinghe, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies and Senior Professor in Forensic Medicine at the University of Kelaniya.

Her presentation highlighted challenges faced by women in science, including issues surrounding sexual and gender-based violence.

Competitions

Winners of the Essay Competition on “Challenges and Opportunities in Improving Diversity in STEM Education” and the Photographic Abstract Competition were announced during the event.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Medha Gunaratna, followed by a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast.

Global Women’s Breakfast 2025

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon hosted the Global Women’s Breakfast on 11 February 2025 at the Adamantane House Auditorium in Rajagiriya, in collaboration with the IUPAC Women Chemists Committee.

The event was held under the theme “Accelerating Equity in Science.”

The Women Chemists Committee was initially established in 2019. Prof. Priyani Paranagama, past president of IChemC and from the University of Kelaniya, played an important role in its initiation.

Guest Speakers

Prof. Janitha Liyanage, then President of IChemC, highlighted the significant contribution of women across different occupations and sectors.

Ms. Chathini Uduwana, Country Head and Vice President of Typefi Systems Sri Lanka and Women in Tech Ambassador, encouraged women to pursue their goals in supportive professional environments.

Dr. Indira Kahawita, Consultant Dermatologist at the National Hospital Colombo, addressed women's health, self-care and overall wellbeing while balancing professional and personal responsibilities.

The event concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast and provided an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience and potential of women in science.

Sri Lankan Women Chemists Breakfast 2024

For the fourth consecutive year, the Women Chemists Committee organized the Sri Lankan Women Chemists Breakfast to coincide with the IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast.

The event was held on 27 February 2024 from 9.00 a.m. onwards at Adamantane House, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.

The theme for the event was “Catalyzing Diversity in Science.”

Programme

The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Namal Priyantha, President of IChemC, followed by an introduction by Prof. Priyani Paranagama, Chairperson of the Women Chemists Committee and Chair of Chemistry at the University of Kelaniya.

Guest speeches were delivered by Dr. Kala Peiris, Director of the Sri Lanka Center for Development Facilitation and Development Consultant, and Prof. Manawadevi Ganehenage, Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya.

The programme included presentations from finalists of the Photographic Abstract Competition and the inter-university competition on “Nurturing Work-Life Balance.”

Winners were announced, followed by a vote of thanks by Dr. Gobika Thiripuranathar, Secretary of the Women Chemists Committee.

The event concluded with a breakfast session that enabled participants to discuss, network and share experiences in support of diversity and gender equality in the scientific community.

Essay Competition on “Challenges and Opportunities in Improving Diversity in STEM Education”

The Women Chemists Committee of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon organized this essay competition as a dedicated platform for young and ambitious women chemists to share their perspectives on promoting diversity in science.

Eligible Participants

Female undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students pursuing Chemistry as a major or minor discipline at a Sri Lankan university or an institution of higher education in Sri Lanka were eligible to participate.

25 January 2026

Submission

The essay, together with the endorsement from the Head of the Department, was to be submitted through the designated Google Form.

Rewards

The authors of the first, second and third winning essays were to receive certificates. The winning essays were also selected for publication in Chemistry in Sri Lanka Magazine.

Photographic Abstract Competition

The Women Chemists Committee established this virtual competition to broaden the ways in which scientific knowledge and research findings can be shared and communicated.

The competition provided ambitious science scholars with an opportunity to showcase novel research findings through an innovative photographic abstract.

Target Group

Female undergraduate and postgraduate students and research assistants pursuing research in academia and industry were particularly encouraged to participate.

Submission Deadline

The submission deadline was extended to 18 January 2026 .

The initiative formed part of the WCC's programme of activities aimed at encouraging scientific communication, creativity and participation by women in science.

Fostering Equality & Excellence: A Discussion on Women Empowerment in Chemistry

The Second International Conference on “Frontiers in Chemical Technology 2024 (FCT-2024)” was organized by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon from 20–22 June 2024 at the Marino Beach Hotel, Colombo.

FCT-2024 focused on technological advancements in chemical technology, including areas such as energy, food, environment, medicine and waste management.

A highlight of the final day was a panel discussion organized by the Women Chemists Committee on women empowerment in chemistry.

Moderator

The discussion was moderated by Prof. Priyani A. Paranagama , Chairperson of the WCC and Treasurer of FCT-2024.

Panel Experts
  • Prof. Supawan Tantayanon – Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. Her work includes promoting small-scale chemistry to reduce hazardous chemical use in undergraduate education.
  • Prof. Zuriati Zakaria – Retired professor and member of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, with experience in advocating for the empowerment of women in Asian countries.
  • Dr. Ale Palermo – Head of Global Inclusion at the Royal Society of Chemistry. She discussed global inclusion and initiatives supporting wider participation in chemistry.
  • Dr. Thelma Abeysinghe – Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the Open University of Sri Lanka. She discussed challenges faced by women in STEM and the importance of perseverance and role models.
Key Discussion Themes

The discussion considered the changes needed in STEM environments to enable women to thrive, including wider opportunities, supportive professional environments and greater inclusion.

The session concluded with an optimistic message emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and action to address systemic challenges and create fair and supportive spaces for women in science.

The Women Chemists Committee continues to create opportunities for women chemists to connect, contribute, lead and inspire the next generation of scientists.
