About the Center for Quality Assurance
The Center for Quality Assurance (CQA) of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), was established on the 01st of September 2023 in accordance with the guidelines stipulated in the circular Non-State Higher Education Circular No. 01/2023 issued by the University Grants Commission on 11/04/2023.
The CQA, as per its Vision and Mission, is responsible for providing continuous guidance and oversight of quality assurance procedures of the entire Institute, and specifically the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS), the academic arm of the Institute, in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the above circular.
The CQA of the IChemC is headed by Director, who is engaged in fulfilling academic and administrative tasks involved with the CQA.
The activities of the CQA are administered by a Management Committee (MC), which is a sub-committee of the Council of IChemC on Quality Assurance, chaired by the Director/CQA.
A Director is responsible for the overall administration of the Center and is supported by the members of the MC and other staff.

Director's Message
The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (ICHEMC), since the inception, with the Council and Council sub-committees, has ensured the standards and quality in its academic degrees awarded.
The educational arm, College of Chemical Sciences (CCS), established in January 2001 conducts and continually monitors all the educational and training activities of the Institute.
Quality assurance (QA) involves systematic, ongoing processes and internal/external mechanisms used to monitor, evaluate, maintain and enhance the quality of the teaching-learning process, student support, and overall institutional governance.
It is a continuous culture of accountability and improvement. Thus, everyone in the Institute representing all disciplines is responsible and accountable for each step of duties and responsibilities he/she is engaged in.
In order to achieve the highest quality within the IChemC, the Management Committee (MC) of CQA has been involved in a number of initiatives and developed useful documents including policies, guidelines, Terms of References (TORs) with the support of relevant stakeholders.
The CQA is regularly organizing awareness programs on QA for the staff members in all categories of the Institute in order to streamline the practices.
Thereby, IChemC aims to fulfill the expectation of all stakeholders meeting the required quality and standards.
Our target is to produce high quality personnel in the field of chemistry who are capable of steering themselves on a path of guaranteed excellence when embarking on a future career in industry, academia, or being entrepreneurs.

Responsibilities and Duties of CQA
- To be instrumental in providing guidelines for maintaining the overall quality of IChemC by propelling all entities, namely, academic/research, administrative, financial, and nonacademic.
- To define SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound) objectives to attain the highest possible level of performance.
- To be the driving force of continuous assessment of the institutional quality of all aspects of IChemC and recommend necessary improvement strategies.
- To provide the suitable mechanism toward achieving the best quality in terms of the teaching-learning process, research activities and administration.
- To contribute the best possible way to enhance the national and international standing of IChemC.
Objectives of CQA
Broad Objectives
- To institutionalize a culture of quality assurance in accordance with national guidelines and international practices.
- To ensure that the procedures of the Institute are aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) guidelines and national requirements.
- To develop and maintain a favorable public perception of the Institute through improved quality of education based on the consistent practice of quality assurance procedures.
Specific Objectives
- To coordinate all QA related activities within the Institution to provide good quality education.
- To develop policies and procedures for quality education and liaise with the UGC/QAC and other external quality assurance and accreditation agencies.
- To recommend, monitor, and continuously review programmes.
- To continuously monitor Teaching, Learning, Research and Assessment procedures.
- To assure the quality of academic programmes.
- To assure the quality of other institutional services.
- To assure the quality of teaching staff.
- To enhance learning resources and student support.
- To develop and monitor Information Systems.
- To assist in introducing new degree programmes.
- To assist in the preparation of Institutional/Program self-evaluation reports.
- To prepare Standard Operational Procedures for CQA in line with the QA process.
- To organize awareness programs on QA for the staff members in all categories.
- To introduce quality and QA aspects in the Corporate Plan of the Institute.
- To review SOR, TORs for all staff and TORs of committees/subcommittees.

A team of well qualified internal academic staff members covering all disciplines of Chemistry provide their service to maintain the quality of academic programs.
Further, as it is important to obtain services of competent external lecturers, suitable expert personnel based on their teaching experience in selected fields are identified.
